Coast to Coast Tour Report

Our Coast to Coast Tour took place on Sunday 15th May and was a great success.  A full entry of 52 cars took part representing the best classic and modern sports cars from around the world. Fantastic weather too!

The start was at the Atlantic Café at Portreath beach.  Phil and the team served tea, coffee and breakfast rolls before everyone set off.

The route took the cars across Cornwall to Marazion where they had a lovely view of the sea and St Michael’s Mount before heading to the first checkpoint at Praa Sands. After this they followed a little used coastal lane and had a fantastic view over the sea as they headed down into Porthleven.  Coffee break was at the lovely Harbour Inn.

The second part of the morning route took the cars around Helston and onto the Lizard peninsula. Another beautiful sea view was admired as the cars descended into Poldhu Cove to checkpoint two. After this they travelled across the Lizard and soon reached the picturesque seaside village of Coverack and checkpoint three. It was only a short drive up the road from there to the lunch break at Roskilly’s Ice Cream Farm. We had a lovely lunch in the courtyard and another chance to look at all the cars.

The afternoon section took the cars northwards to the beautiful Gillan Creek and checkpoint four followed by the tiny creekside road to St Anthony in Meneage. Shortly afterwards they passed over the ancient bridges at Mawgan Creek and headed for Gweek and Port Navas and checkpoint five.

The route then headed towards Falmouth and drivers enjoyed a circuit of Pendennis Point with its spectacular sea views and checkpoint six before continuing with a lovely drive along Falmouth seafront followed by Swanpool beach and finally Maenporth beach for the finish. Cream teas were served at The Cove Restaurant which must have one of Cornwall’s loveliest settings overlooking the sea.

The awards were all voted for by the participants and the most admired cars were as follows:

1st David & Karen Richards, Fraser Nash Le Mans Replica

2nd David Coleman & Michael Bowden, Ford Escort RS1600

3rd Bob Pepper & Elliot Bullen, Lotus Cortina Mk1

4th John & Catherine Ferris, Triumph TR3A

5th John & Dominique Sharpe, Jaguar E Type Series 1

6th Roger & Philippa Kessell, Volvo P1800S

Well done also to the next few high scoring cars: David Barnes & Doug Castle, Austin 7 Opal; Simon & Matthew Elks, Austin Healey Sprite Mk1; William & Julia Schofield, Jaguar XK150 dhc; Julian Stephens & John Bryant, Triumph TR4A; Keith & Julie Julian, Jaguar E Type Series 1.

A special thank you to Pete Wellington who produced a superb route book and also supplied the rally plates and stickers. Thanks also to Dave Brenton & Allen Iggulden for course opening car, Tony Wood for vehicle checks and, with Jeremy Thomas, also course closing car and to all the marshals who criss-crossed Cornwall to cover all the checkpoints for us – Bob & Nora Eddy, Roger & Elsie Hargreaves, Chris & Joanna Cocks, Nathan Prisk, Dave Biggs, Felix Bacon, Roger & Bernice Wickins and Roy & Lyn Windebank. Much appreciated.

Thank you to all of you who returned the survey. We have had lots of lovely feedback from everyone as well as useful comments and suggestions.  All being well we will run next year’s event on 14th May. Melody

Praise for Cornish Classic Coast to Coast Tour

The organisers of the Coast to Coast Classic Car Tour 2016, were very pleased that the drivers in the event bestowed praise on them for the interesting route chosen, and the professional running of the event.  In return, they thanked the dozens of marshals, who helped out at the beginning at Portreath, at the coffee break at Porthleven, at the lunchtime stop at Roskilly’s Ice Cream Farm, near St Keverne, at the finish at the Cove Restaurant, Maenporth Beach near Falmouth, and along the route throughout West Cornwall.  All of the four venues gave their utmost to please all concerned with the drinks and food that they provided.  Special mention must be made of Karen and David Richards CBE, who had their car, a 1952 Fraser Nash Le Mans Replica, trailered down from London for the event.  Fittingly, they were chosen as the most popular entrant, with Karen driving, and David navigating Karen from the Route Book.  This was very appropriate, as in 1981, David was World Rally Champion as co-driver with Ari Vatinen in their Ford Escort RS 1800.

It was also very pleasing to see some familiar faces from the clubs past.  Chris and Joanna Cocks, Roger Hargreaves, Dave Biggs and Roger Woodley were amongst the many marshals that helped throughout.  The cars were a delight to see, from the 1936 Austin 7 Opal, the 4 Triumph TR’s, the 3 Jaguar E Types, the 3 Porsches, the Morgans, the 3 MGB GT’s and both of the Lotus.  To many onlookers, the Lotus Cortina Mk 1, the Ford Escort Mk 1 RS 1600, and the 1968 Mini Cooper S World Rally Car Replica were the 1960’s and 70’s revisited.  There were lots of other cars that looked beautiful, but far too many to mention individually.

On behalf of Truro and District Motor Club, Melody, Allen and Pete would like to thank all the marshals who helped on the day, because without the marshals, the Tour could not have been run.  The car owners themselves, must also be praised as they took the trouble to enter, and show their lovely vehicles to the appreciative public on the route, and at the various venues where the cars stopped for breaks.   Many days of dedicated hard work and skilful planning were put into the event by Melody Kozlowski.  Without her enthusiasm and persistence, the entry list would not have reached the 52 that it did.  Pete Wellington did a very professional job producing the excellent Route Books.  I would personally like to thank Dave Brenton for driving me around the route as “Course Car”.
