Car Recognition Quiz 2019 – The Results

Car Recognition Quiz 2019 – for the Paul Monro Trophy

The Plume of Feathers Mitchell orangery was once again fully packed with teams competing for the Paul Monro Trophy awarded for the best team last week.
The evening very successfully (as normal) was organised by Nigel and Rose Stephens in aid of MacMillan Cancer Support.
Truro Motor Club had three teams entered, ‘All the Gears no Idea’ team made up by Bob Eddy, Phil Sheridan and Paul Deacon, the ‘Watergate’ team made up of Dave Brenton, Roger Hargreaves and Shelly Deacon who was standing in for Chairman John Collins who due to illness could not attend. This did lead to some rivalry between the Deacon family. The third team was Mike Tregoning, Roger Langford and Tony Wood making up the ‘TDMC old Rally Boys’ team.
Triumph Stag Owners Club, Merlin Farms, Cape to Capers, St Austell TR’s and Chris Cocks were regular entries amongst the twenty teams competing.
The quiz had three picture rounds, Pre 1970s, 1970 to 2000 and 2000 to 2019. There was then a break and this was followed with a round entitled ‘The Euros’, this was made up from a power point presentation with more cars and even some marques badges. As normal Nigel and Rose had some very interesting pictures, some reasonably easy and some very hard.

The evening raised a total £705, which was made up from the entry fees, the raffle and included £77 collected from change popped into the pot as people left the venue.
The quiz was won by the St Austell TR’s with 211 points after many years of being second and third, well done to them. Triumph Stag Owners Club and TDMC Old Rally Boys were joint 2nd with 205 points each.
Thank you to all that entered and see you next year.

Aston Martin Charity Evening Cheque Presentation

TRURO & DISTRICT MOTOR CLUB CHARITY FUND RAISING.

With the assistance of our club President we have organised a couple of fund raising events for charities. The completion of last year’s event organised by David Richards along with friends from Aston Martin resulted in representatives from the club being invited to the Cornwall Air Ambulance open day on 18 February. After a tour around the helicopter we presented them with a cheque for £1085, this was half the amount we raised the other half was given to the Cornwall Urology Trust (Prostate Cancer) earlier this year.

The background to this fund-raising event was that in October we held an Aston Martin evening at the Memorial Hall in St Mawes. David Richards had arranged to bring down some friends to give us a very interesting insight into Aston Martin. We had David Wright who gave us the early years of the company, then Maitland Cook told all about the David Brown period. David then did his bit on Aston Martin Racing followed by Marek Reichman on present day Aston Martin and the future. The hall was filled which meant along with donations for the refreshments and the raffle prizes donated together with the speakers giving their time free enabled us to raise a good sum for both nominated charities.

The event we organised also coincided on the same day with the Aston Martin club celebrating the birth place of the motoring icon who founded Aston Martin, Lionel Martin.  When I was invited to the plaque unveiling I had a big surprise to find out that this was to be held just down the road from where I live, you live and learn as they say! Lionel Martin was in fact born at Nansladron House in 1878, which is now in the grounds of Sun Valley holiday park Pentewan. At that time his family owned china clays pits in the area. The grounds were filled with many different model Astons but the one to stand out was brought along especially for the ceremony from the Aston Hertitage Trust the A3 prototype valued at £20million! See attached picture, together with one of David Richards giving a speech before unveiling the joint Cornwall Heritage Trust & Aston Martin Heritage Trust plaque celebrating this historical event for St Austell.

TDMC Rolling Road session -The results!

A Great turnout for the first annual TDMC rolling road day. 12 Cars braved the rain to turn up on Saturday morning at ARM to test the car on the rolling road. A wide range a cars from a standard K series Metro of Kennan which showed a massive 67bhp but may have some explaining to do as the care had a black box fitted as this was his first car! At the other end were the big guns of Ian Roscorla in his new 6.0l Vauxhall Monaro and the Nissan 350z (supercharged) and it went the way of Jamie Findon in the 350z with the best of the day at 457bhp. The weird award but putting in a good show at 150bhp was the diesel converted VW caddy of Ryan Freeman.

Full details of the event –

‘The Story of Aston Martin’

Club President David Richards has on behalf of the Club invited a number of guests to come along and give presentations on this very British marque.

The event will be held at the Memorial Hall St Mawes on Saturday 14th October 2017 commencing at 8.00pm, it is a ticket only event and we have priced them at a very reasonable cost of £15.00 each.

After the normal expenses, the remaining money raised will all go to two local charities – The Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust and The Cornwall Urology Trust for Prostate Cancer.

Speakers will be:

David Wright, a longstanding member of the Aston Martin Owners Club and aficionado of the brand, who will talk about how the company started and the pre-war years of Aston Martin.

Maitland Cook, who knew all the key members of the 1950’s Aston Martin Race Team, will talk about the David Brown era of the company.

David Richards, who will bring us right up to date with the latest motor racing activities from when they launched the DBR9 in 2003 right up to the most recent Le Mans success and their new car for next season.

And Marek Reichman, who is the current Vice President of Aston Martin and responsible for the design of all the current cars, who will talk about the present vehicles and the future of the company.

Quite a line up, which bodes well for a very exciting evening.

The post code for the memorial hall is TR2 5DJ, it is up the road opposite the Idle Rocks hotel. You should use the general car park as there is very, very limited parking in the hall road.
